Extensions that change your settings

This article applies to Chrome for Windows only.

With your permission, some extensions that you install from the Chrome Web Store can make changes to your Chrome settings to enhance your browsing experience and make using the extension easier. These extensions can change settings such as your homepage, new tab page, search engine, or start page.

Tip: When you install an extension make sure you pay attention to the list of settings that are changed before you install the extension.

Change your settings back to normal
If you don't want your settings changed by an extension you have to uninstall or disable the extension. You can't use the extension without letting it change your settings.

When you remove the extension your settings will go back to the state they were before you installed that extension.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the menu
    tgmsrPRh34tM4q0WYv7l-NNXDz7dqm7ftk8TyCEguoY30xkEg8lcw_ULI23ki9Q=w18-h18
    on the browser toolbar.
  3. Click More Tools.
  4. Click Extensions.
  5. Click the trash can

next to the extension you want to remove.
  6. In the confirmation dialog that appears, click Remove.
See the settings that an extension changed
You can see the settings that have been changed by an extension by going to your Chrome Settings. In the Chrome Settings menu you'll see a box around each setting that has been changed and the name of the extension that is controlling that setting.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the menu
    tgmsrPRh34tM4q0WYv7l-NNXDz7dqm7ftk8TyCEguoY30xkEg8lcw_ULI23ki9Q=w18-h18
    on the browser toolbar.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Look for a rectangular box that says "An extension, [extension name], is controlling this setting."
